Using the Modiwell dry flush toilet
Nellie has a Modiwell LE-310 dry flush toilet. It uses no water and has no black tank, so there's nothing to dump at the end of your trip. Each refill cartridge gives about 15 flushes, and every renter starts with a fresh set of bags.

How it works
Inside the toilet is a roll of film, like a long tube bag. After you go, you press a button and the toilet twists and heat-seals the film, so the waste is closed up in its own bag. The sealed bag drops to the bottom, and you throw it in the trash.
Before you use it
- The display is on and shows the battery level. If it's blank, press the power switch on the back.
- The battery number is above 25.
- Both legs are fully open (they click) and the toilet doesn't wobble.
- A refill is loaded and you can't see "STOP" on the film.
Using it
- Open the lid and add the Modiwell coagulant to the bag. It's a powder that soaks up liquid.
- Use the toilet like normal. Toilet paper goes in the bag.
- Close the lid. It closes softly on its own, so don't force it.
Sealing (the “flush”)
- Press and hold Start for more than 2 seconds.
- The display counts down while it seals. This takes 2 to 3 minutes.
- It beeps when it's done, and the sealed bag drops to the bottom.
- Take the bag out.
- Add fresh coagulant before the next use.
Stay nearby until it's done, and don't put anything on the toilet while it's sealing.
Throwing it away
Put the sealed bag in a regular trash can, following local rules. Don't put it down a dump station or a campground toilet.
Changing the refill
You start with fresh bags, and each refill cartridge is good for about 15 flushes. When it runs out:
- When STOP shows on the film, press and hold Manual until all the old film is fed out.
- Open the lid. Take off the seat cushion and the retainer ring.
- Set the new refill roll on the base with the arrows on the straps pointing up.
- Undo and remove the four straps, then put the ring back on.
- Pull the outer layer of film up about 8 inches (20 cm). Gather it evenly and push it down into the toilet.
- Push the guide straight down into the guide wheel until it stops, lift it back into place, and put the seat back on.
- Press and hold Start for 2 seconds to make the first seal. Toss that first piece.
- Add coagulant and you're ready.
Power
The toilet has its own battery. Charge it when the number drops to 25, using only the charger that came with it. Below 25 it may not seal properly.
Please don't
- Seal when the battery is at 25 or less.
- Use bags or coagulant that aren't Modiwell's.
- Eat the coagulant. Keep it away from kids and pets.
- Force the lid closed.
Troubleshooting
- Screen is blank: Press the power switch on the back. Still blank? Charge it.
- Wobbles: Open both legs until they click, and check the floor is level.
- Bag tore: Press Manual to feed out the torn part. Check the new film is OK, then hold Start to reseal.
- Bag didn't drop: Clean anything stuck at the seal or at the bottom of the toilet.
- E3, E4 or E5: Something is in the sealing area. Clean it out, then turn the power off and back on.
- E1 or E2, smoke, or a strange noise: Stop using it, turn the power off, and contact us.
